Among sleep apneas we can distinguish :<\/div> <\/div> <div class=\"w-separator type_default size_medium thick_1 style_solid color_custom cont_none\" style=\"border-color: #85b500; color: #85b500;\"><span class=\"w-separator-h\"><\/span><\/div><div class=\"wpb_text_column \"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n<p class=\"text_center fnt_size_20 fnt_lgreen\"><strong>Obstructive apnea, the most frequent one, which affects around 8% of the population <sup>(1)<\/sup><br \/>\nCentral apnea,<br \/>\nMixed Apnea, both obstructive and central apnea. <sup>(2)<\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div> <\/div> <div class=\"w-separator type_default size_medium thick_1 style_solid color_custom cont_none\" style=\"border-color: #85b500; color: #85b500;\"><span class=\"w-separator-h\"><\/span><\/div><div class=\"g-cols wpb_row offset_small vc_inner \"><div class=\"vc_col-sm-12 wpb_column vc_column_container\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_text_column \"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><p>We will just focus here on obstructive sleep apnea, also referred to as Obstructive Sleep Apnea \u2013 Hypopnea Syndrome.<br \/>\nSleeping on your back favours obstructive sleep apnea<sup>(1)<\/sup> and Ronfless<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> is highly recommended in this case. Obstructive sleep apnea as well as central and mixed apnea require an appropriate medical diagnosis and supportive care: see your doctor for advice.<\/p><\/div> <\/div> <\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section><section class=\"l-section wpb_row height_medium\"><div class=\"l-section-h i-cf\"><div class=\"g-cols offset_small\"><div class=\"vc_col-sm-12 wpb_column vc_column_container\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_text_column \"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"content_title green_border_bottom\">What is sleep apnea ?<\/div>\n<p>We talk about <strong>sleep apnea<\/strong> when repeated pauses in breathing linked to an obstruction of the airways occur during your sleep and last for at least 10 seconds. These pauses are called sleep apneas when the obstruction is complete or hypopneas when it is partial. <sup>(3)<\/sup><\/p>\n<p><strong>It is necessary to go back to the origin of snoring to fully understand this affliction:<\/strong> we snore because during the night our muscles loosen up: those of our arms and legs but also of our throat. While we are relaxing, our muscles and the floppy tissues of the throat collapse, obstructing the airways. Yet airflow must remain constant to ensure a good oxygenation, that\u2019s why our respiratory systems takes deeper breath-ins, making the walls of our throat vibrate and causing snoring. <sup>(1)<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>When the walls of your throat totally collapse, the airway is blocked, the muscles in the back of your throat fail to keep the airway open: <strong>this is what we call<\/strong>sleep apnea. It will lead to oxygen deprivation: the brain will wake the sleeper up for a short while allowing the muscles of the throat to recover their tonicity and to let you breathe out. Sleepers usually don\u2019t remember these \u00ab \u00ab micro awakenings\u201d nor the poor quality of their sleep.<sup>(1)<\/sup><\/p>\n<p><strong>Several factors favor obstructive sleep apnea: :<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022 Overweight and obesity,<br \/>\n\u2022 Age: obstructive sleep apnea is more common among the 45\/64 age group,<br \/>\n\u2022 Nasal-related obstruction problems, linked to allergies and surgeries ,<br \/>\n\u2022 Genetic and anatomical specificities,<br \/>\n\u2022 Consumption of alcohol, sedatives or cigarettes,<br \/>\n\u2022 Supine position. <sup>(4)<\/sup><\/p>\n<p><strong>Around 40% of the people who suffer from obstructive sleep apnea suffer in fact from positional sleep apnea<sup>(4,5)<\/sup>:<\/strong> The pauses in breathing while sleeping on your back are much more frequent than when you sleep on your side. That is the reason why it is much safer when you suffer from positional obstructive sleep apnea to learn not to sleep on your back and adopt a position on your stomach or side during the night.<\/div> <\/div> <\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section><section class=\"l-section wpb_row height_small\"><div class=\"l-section-h i-cf\"><div class=\"g-cols offset_small\"><div class=\"vc_col-sm-12 wpb_column vc_column_container\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_text_column \"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n<h3 class=\"green_bg_text pad_bottom_15 white_border_bottom\">Around 40% of the people who suffer from obstructive sleep apnea suffer in fact from positional sleep apnea<\/h3>\n<\/div> <\/div> <\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section><section class=\"l-section wpb_row height_auto\"><div class=\"l-section-h i-cf\"><div class=\"g-cols offset_small valign_bottom\"><div class=\"vc_col-sm-12 wpb_column vc_column_container  vc_custom_1474968431026\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_text_column \"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"vc_col-md-5 pull-left\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"left_image alignnone size-full wp-image-5469\" src=\"http:\/\/ronfless.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/05-Ronflement-et-apnee.jpg\" alt=\"05-ronflement-et-apnee\" width=\"557\" height=\"870\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ronfless.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/05-Ronflement-et-apnee.jpg 557w, https:\/\/ronfless.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/05-Ronflement-et-apnee-192x300.jpg 192w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 557px) 100vw, 557px\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"vc_col-md-7 pull-right\">\n<div class=\"content_title green_border_bottom\">AROUND 40% OF OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEAS WOULD BE CAUSED BY SUPINE POSITION!<\/div>\n<p>If you believe you are suffering from obstructive sleep apnea it is highly recommended to see your doctor. The diagnosis will be confirmed by an in-lab overnight sleep study at a sleep unit or by a home-sleep apnea test which will record your sleep. If the diagnosis is confirmed, your doctor will prescribe a suitable treatment, according to the seriousness of the apnea. <sup>(7,8)<\/sup><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"fnt_green\">\u2022<\/span> <strong>Hygienic and dietary measures :<\/strong> whatever the seriousness of your sleep disorders these latter have to be taken into account. If your snoring is light, these measures can be sufficient to handle the problem. These measures include losing weight if you are overweight, decreasing your alcohol and cigarette consumption and adopting a good position when falling asleep: on your stomach or on your side as sleeping on your back favors and makes obstructive sleep apnea worse. <sup>(7)<\/sup><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"fnt_green\">\u2022<\/span> <strong>The wearing of a mandibular protrusion orthesis :<\/strong> is recommended to treat moderate forms of sleep apnea. It consists of a dental appliance which is worn at night and which will push the lower jaw forward, preventing the tongue from falling back and blocking the airways during sleep. Please note that the protrusion orthesis must be worn permanently to be effective while Ronfless<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> is only temporary: once you got used to stopping sleeping on your back, you will stop using Ronfless<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"fnt_green\">\u2022<\/span> <strong>Continuous positive airway pressure:<\/strong> this medical appliance is highly recommended in the severe forms of the disease. It consists of an appliance which will gently blow air into the airways to keep them open permanently, thus stopping obstructive sleep apneas.
